Did you know cold weather can affect your battery? ❄️

Brrrr! The cold months are here, and it’s time for warm hats and fluffy scarves. But did you know that your electric cargo bike can also suffer in cold weather? Specifically, the battery needs extra care during winter time. Here’s how you can help your bike’s battery survive the cold season!

It’s winter time, which means that we need to prepare for cold temperatures. For owners of electric cargo bikes, it is important to pay extra attention to the battery. Which is also relevant for our Urban Arrow cargo bikes. Cold weather can reduce the battery’s performance, negatively affecting the operation of the electric motor. This means that the battery can drain faster and its lifespan may be shortened.

Tips for protecting your battery in cold weather
  • Remove the battery from the bike
To protect your battery, take it out of the bike when not in use. Store it at room temperature whenever possible, whether at home or in the office. Keeping the battery warm helps maintain its performance.
  • Charge at room temperature
Always charge your battery indoors at room temperature. If the battery is cold, let it warm up before plugging it in. This prevents damage and ensures efficient charging.
  • Avoid deep discharge
Try not to let your battery completely drain, especially in cold weather, as this can cause permanent damage and shorten its lifespan. Even if you’re not riding frequently, charge the battery at least once a month to maintain its capacity and prevent deep discharge.

Why cold affects your battery?

The ideal operating temperature for a bike battery is between 10°C and 25°C. Protecting your battery from the cold ensures your e-bike performs well, even during the winter months.
Low temperatures can reduce your battery’s capacity, directly impacting the distance you can ride on a single charge. When temperatures drop below 5°C, your range may decrease by 5% to 20%, and in freezing conditions, up to 30%. This happens because energy cells become less efficient in the cold.
