In the Urban Arrow Tales series, we feature families experiencing their daily adventures with the Family cargo bike. These true Urban Arrow families discover every day how their cargo bike makes family life not only more practical but also much more fun.
In this edition, we introduce you to: Noelle Mathijssen, her partner Ronald, and their little son Miles.
Who are you?
We are Ronald and Noëlle, and we have a son Miles. We’ve been living in Rotterdam for ten years now and completely fell in love with the city. Originally, we came from a quieter part of the Netherlands, but Rotterdam’s energy won us over and we decided to build our lives here. Nowadays we live in the beautiful neighborhood of Hillegersberg, where we enjoy the perfect balance between the buzz of the city and the peace we were looking for.
Noëlle works at a real estate agency in Hillegersberg, while Ronald works as an account manager. Since one and a half years, we’ve also been proud members of the Urban Arrow community.
What was the main reason you decided to purchase an Urban Arrow cargo bike?
For us, the Urban Arrow has become truly indispensable in our daily life in Rotterdam. It’s the perfect way to move quickly and easily through the city. Whether it’s a trip to the market, visiting friends, or a family day out, the cargo bike gives us exactly the flexibility we need. It’s not only practical, but often even faster than endlessly searching for a parking spot. And on top of that, we save a lot on parking fees too.
Safety was another important reason, especially when it comes to Miles. In the Urban Arrow, he always sits comfortably and securely, protected from both rain and sun. That gives us so much peace of mind every time we ride.
And of course, the space makes a huge difference. No more struggling with bags or trying to carry everything on a regular bike. The spacious box fits it all, from groceries to toys and even an extra set of clothes for Miles. It means we can take everything we need with us, without any stress at all.
When did you first go for a ride with Miles? And what do you remember from this first cargo bike adventure?
The very first time we went cycling with our son Miles in the cargo bike, he was just three months old. We placed the Maxi-Cosi in the bike using the car seat adapters, which made it super easy to get around the city. I also threw in the baby carrier, and of course, the diaper bag had to come along too. That way, we had everything we needed right at hand. It was April, and the first rays of sunshine were finally breaking through, making it the perfect moment to enjoy some fresh air.
At that time, Miles was a difficult sleeper, but what we didn’t know was that the cargo bike would become the perfect place for him to nap. From day one, he has always slept like a dream in the Urban Arrow. Now, more than a year later, we often have to carry him out while he’s still fast asleep. It has truly become one of the best moments of our day: cycling together, enjoying the city, while Miles peacefully drifts off to sleep.
What always goes with you in the cargo bike when you go out?
It’s actually easier to say what doesn’t come along. The stroller always goes with us, as well as a bag full of essentials for Miles such as diapers, food, and extra clothes. His toys are always on board too, because they turn every ride into a little party for him. Sometimes we even bring a travel cot if we’re out for a longer day.
When we have packages to send, for example when we’ve sold some of Miles’s clothes on Vinted, those also go in the cargo bike. The storage space is always well used, and it means we can take along everything we need without any trouble.
Do you have any tips for families who are considering buying a cargo bike?
Don’t hesitate, just do it. It gives you so much freedom and convenience. A cargo bike makes everyday life so much easier, especially if you’re often on the go with children. It’s not only practical but also a really fun experience for the kids, they usually love sitting in the cargo bike and riding along.
Which fun spots in Hillegersberg or Rotterdam would you recommend other families to visit by (cargo) bike?Â
There are so many wonderful places in Rotterdam and Hillegersberg that are perfect for a family outing. Below we've listed some of our favorites.
In Rotterdam, you can cycle to the Lake House, a beautiful spot where you can enjoy both the view of the water and a delicious lunch or drink. The best part is that the playground is directly connected to the terrace, so the children can play while you relax and enjoy your meal.
For a day in nature, we really recommend Vroesenpark. It’s a fantastic place on a sunny day, and the Vroesenpaviljoen is the ideal spot to unwind with a coffee or lunch. It’s easy to reach by bike and the park is great for a picnic or a walk.
In Hillegersberg, you’ll also find some amazing children’s stores that you simply shouldn’t miss. Pomme de Jus, BonBon, and Little Department Store are all charming shops where you can find lovely items for your kids. And of course, a babyccino at Juffrouw van Zanten is an absolute must as well.
